COVID is Circulating – How Can We Protect Others and ALSO Receive Medical Care?

One of the issues surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic is that we’re tasked with both getting diagnosed and treated for COVID, while also having a responsibility to protect others – especially those that may have immunodeficiencies.

Often, this conflicts.

Early in the pandemic, many of us had the experience of waiting in line for a nasal swab to test for COVID-19, and being surrounded by people that were coughing, sneezing, and showing symptoms all while we’re waiting for treatment. That is not a desirable situation to be in – we’re supposed to avoid public places, but also get tested in a public place. These issues became even more common when treatments like Paxlovid became available, and suddenly we need to head to a medical office to get treated for an illness we’re supposed to isolate when we have.

Part of the reason that we were put in this situation is that many of us did not have access to any other form of medical care. Our insurance often told us that we needed to go to the doctor, even though that both increased our own likelihood of catching an illness and the likelihood of spreading it to other people.
